The Finnish Border Guard acts in many fields and its activity has a broad impact on people and the environment. This gives great possibilities to advance responsibility and sustainable development in the fields where the Guard has influence.
The five responsibility goals that have been chosen for the Finnish Border Guard’s responsibility plan are tied to the UN’s sustainable development goals, the fulfilment of which is gauged with indicators. The plan is executed within the scope of the resources that have been granted to the Border Guard, as a part of the Guard’s operation.
The chosen UN sustainable development goals:
- Goal 3 – Good health and well-being
- Goal 12 – Responsible consumption and production
- Goal 13 – Climate action
- Goal 14 – Life below water
- Goal 16 – Peace, justice and strong institutions
With taking measures and reaching goals according to responsibility and sustainable development, the Finnish Border Guard for its part secures equal and equitable service in all of Finland, protects nature, and participates in making our carbon footprint smaller.
Duties that are central to the sustainable development goals are, among others: border security duties and maritime search and rescue, which maintain people’s safety and feeling of safety, as well as equality and justice; prevention and control of maritime environmental damage; and control of hunting and fishing.
Preventing and combating crime is a part of upholding societal peace and justice. The education system for the staff and for those that are liable for military service supports lifelong learning, parity and equality as well as makes use of new learning methods. The operation of the Finnish Border Guard has been organised according to corporate governance, and in a way that promotes equality.
