Use these instructions when travelling through Helsinki Airport.
These instructions are valid as of 12 October 2025, when the Entry/Exit System (EES) will be in use.
Automated border control is based on the biometric identification of the passenger. You can use automated border control if you have a biometric passport.
How to use automated border control
Based on your circumstances, choose the right section in the list below.
You can proceed directly to an e-gate.
You must first use a self-service kiosk. After successfully using the kiosk please proceed to manual passport control.
This applies if you have not visited any Schengen countries within the last three years (after the Entry/Exit System (EES) started operations on 12 October 2025).

Citizen of a non-EU country means a traveller not holding the nationality of any European Union country nor the nationality of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.’
You must first use a self-service kiosk. After successfully using the kiosk please proceed to an e-gate.

- Select your language preference.
- Insert your passport into the passport reader, with your photo facing the reader.
- Remove your glasses, hat and other accessories.
- Look at the camera while it takes your photograph.
- Press four fingers of your right hand on the fingerprint scanner.
- Answer the questions.
- Collect your passport when the passport reader returns it.
Follow the instructions on the screen. You will be referred to either an e-gate or to manual passport control to complete your border check.

- Enter an e-gate. Keep your eyes facing forward. Only one person at a time can be in the e-gate.
- Insert your passport into the passport reader, with your photo facing the reader.
- Remove your glasses, hat and other accessories.
- Look at the camera while it takes your photograph.
- Collect your passport when the passport reader returns it.
- Once the check has been successfully completed, the exit door opens and you can leave the e-gate.
- If the exit door remains closed, please leave the e-gate and proceed to a manual passport control.
- Travellers requiring additional support or unable to complete their check at an e-gate may proceed to manual passport control.
Your border check is complete once you have successfully exited the e-gate.
