The three largest international border crossing points on the eastern border are located in the area of the Southeast Finland Border Guard District: Nuijamaa, Vaalimaa and Imatra. In addition, Vainikkala is the only rail border crossing point between Finland and Russia. The Southeast Finland Border Guard District is also responsible for handling border checks related to the Saimaa Canal at the ports of Nuijamaa and Lappeenranta, and at the airports in its area.
Finnish Border Guard activities focus on international border crossing points and areas in their immediate vicinity. The entry and exit conditions for all passengers are checked and border checks are aimed at preventing illegal entry into the country.
The land border between border crossing points is monitored by border patrols assisted by border dogs, especially when the ground is not frozen. Parts of the land border are monitored technically.
