With the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, later ETIAS, the entry requirements for visa-exempt third country nationals can be defined before they travel to the Schengen Area and state, whether their trip poses a safety risk, a risk of illegal migration or a severe epidemic risk.
ETIAS travel authorisation is a new requirement for entering the Schengen Area. If a passenger is not in possession of a valid ETIAS travel authorisation, they are not allowed to enter the Schengen Area.
Similar travel authorisation systems preceding the trip have been in use for several years in other countries, such as the United States, Australia and Canada.
The aim is to introduce the ETIAS system in 2026.
