The Finnish Border Guard is the authority responsible for Finland’s border security and safety and security at sea. There is no official abbreviation. However, sometimes the Finnish Border Guard is referred to only as ‘the Border Guard’.
The Finnish Border Guard is headed by the Chief of the Finnish Border Guard. The Border Guard Headquarters heads the operations of the Finnish Border Guard. The Ministry of the Interior also includes a Border Guard Department, which is a part of the Finnish Border Guard. The Border Guard Department is headed by the Deputy Chief of the Finnish Border Guard.
The Finnish Border Guard includes four border guard districts, which are Southeast Finland Border Guard District, North Karelia Border Guard District, Kainuu Border Guard District and Lapland Border Guard District. For greater clarity, the location of the border guard district should be mentioned, for instance, Southeast Finland Border Guard District or Lapland Border Guard District. Each border guard district is headed by its Commander.
The Finnish Border Guard includes two coast guard districts. For greater clarity, please mention if you are referring to Gulf of Finland Coast Guard District or West Finland Coast Guard District. Each coast guard district is headed by its Commander.
The Air Patrol Squadron is in charge of the Finnish Border Guard’s flight operations. The Air Patrol Squadron has bases at Helsinki Airport, in Turku as well as in Rovaniemi. The Air Patrol Squadron is headed by its Commander. The Finnish Border Guard also has access to aircraft: helicopters and surveillance aircraft.
The Border and Coast Guard Academy operates in Imatra and Turku. The Academy is headed by the Director of the Border and Coast Guard Academy. Border and coast guards are trained at the Border and Coast Guard Academy. Officers receive their training in cooperation with the National Defence University.
If a person in a military post is interviewed, please note that their title describes their duty in the organisation, instead of their rank. Occasionally, it may be challenging to distinguish the rank from the title. Primarily, we recommend the use of the title.
For example
- Commander of the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard District, Captain Forename Surname
- Head of the Maritime Safety Unit, Commander Forename Surname
- Border Security Specialist, Major Forename Surname
The Finnish Border Guard Command’s up-to-date titles and ranks are presented on our website raja.fi Command and organisation. Please note that Commander, for instance, is both a rank and a title.
Please, do not use these:
Finland’s Border Guard, Finland’s Coast Guard, Commander of the Finnish Border Guard, Head of the Border Guard.
Ordinarily, visits to the border zone are not arranged for media representatives. The Finnish border zone at the Russian border varies from hundreds of metres up to three kilometres on land. The border zone enhances control and border security. The border zone is monitored.
Moving and staying within in the border zone requires a permit. Moving in the border zone is prohibited on pain of punishment.
The border zone is marked with yellow:
- The perimeter of the border zone is marked with yellow signs, yellow booms or with yellow circles painted or fastened on trees or posts.
- On waterways, the border zone is marked with yellow beacons, buoys and leading beacons.
- The perimeter of the border zone is marked on most of the topographic maps.
- More information available on our website: Raja.fi – Border zone permit.

Border now
Conditions on the eastern border of Finland are at the moment very calm.
At the moment there is no cross-border traffic due to the closure of the border, and, entry to the border crossing points is restricted.
There are very limited opportunities to see or film anything of interest near the border. To join border patrols on land or water is not possible due to operational reasons.
