DTC, a digital travel document being tested in Finland, was selected as one of TIME's best inventions
Every year, TIME publishes the Best Inventions list of groundbreaking inventions. This year's list, in the Apps & Software category, includes the digital travel credential DTC (Digital Travel Credentials), which is being piloted in Finland.
Since the end of August this year, Finnish citizens have been able to test the completely new digital travel document at border control at Helsinki Airport, the first in the world. By participating in piloting, the volunteer DTC users are involved in developing the next generation of travel documents: the DTC is a digital version of the physical passport and is just as reliable. It enables smooth and fast border crossings without compromising security.
The digital travel document will be available for testing until the end of February 2024. It is open to Finnish citizens of legal age travelling on Finnair flights to and/or from London, Manchester or Edinburgh. The Border Guard's website explains how to take part in the pilot.
The Border Guard is piloting the digital travel document in cooperation with the Finnish Police Board, the Finnish Immigration Service, Finnair and Finavia. In addition to Finland, DTC is currently being tested at Zagreb International Airport in Croatia.
