Capability – strategical projects carry us to the future

The Border Guard’s strategical projects have proceeded well. The future capacity of the Border Guard is guaranteed on land, at sea and in the air, with the help of the eastern fence supporting border security, the new offshore patrol vessels, as well as the multipurpose aircraft.

Border surveillance also utilises the developing technique. Technique supports the surveillance of the long land border, as well as maritime security.

Eastern border fence

Construction of the eastern border fence was underway in fourteen target areas in 2024. Trees have been removed in order to enable the construction of the border fence. The received funding has expedited the construction of the fence. Consulting of the landowners in the areas of the fence, as well as preparation of the procurements, continued throughout the year. The Border Guard’s objective has been a good cooperation and partnership with the landowners in the area.

Patrol vessels

Construction of the first offshore patrol vessel of the Patrol Vessel 2025-project proceeded, and its keel laying was carried out. The construction of the second vessel commenced in the autumn. The procurement of patrol and work boats proceeds.

Multipurpose aircraft

The purpose of the MVX-project is to modernize the Border Guard’s surveillance aircraft. The procurement contract of the multipurpose aircraft was signed in June. Construction of the aircraft has commenced in the United States, in accordance with the Border Guard’s demands. The Border Guard and the State Treasury managed to save 4.4 million euro in the trade by using foreign exchange hedging.

Technical systems and facilities

Technical border surveillance systems have gone through renovation and renewal in 2024. Throughout the year, the focus of the development was on system renewal and improvement of situation picture. This work continues.

The facility projects have proceeded: Ivalo, Immola and Onttola provide healthy and safe facilities for conscripts and personnel. A new building for authorities was completed in Ivalo, and the foundation stone of the new garrison building was laid. The renovation of the Border and Coast Guard Academy in Immola was finished at the end of 2024. The renovation of Onttola garrison will commence in the coming years.
